The Bad Speaker Issue

04.30.2013 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

imagesI was at a luncheon recently and during the structured networking portion I ended up with the speaker in my group. As each person gave their elevator pitch the speaker kept looking away as if she was looking for someone and was clearly not interested in what we all had to say.

Having done some speaking in my life I know the most helpful thing before you speak is to learn about your audience, directly from your audience. Knowing your audience in advance means you can tweak your speech in the moment and make sure your audience gets what they need from you. Listening to your audience when you have the chance means they’re more likely to engage with you during your presentation, and buy your up-sell package at the end of the event.

Not paying attention while you have that chance means I’m writing this blog post while you’re speaking.

Why I’m going to Arkansas today

03.21.2013 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

I better meet this guy!
I better meet this guy!

As some of you may know, I was a speech major at Whitworth University in Spokane. My favorite professor is now the Debate coach (which wasn’t active when I attended) and asked me to attend the International Public Debate Association National Tournament as a judge. For every 4 students he takes he’s required to provide a judge. So I just scored an all expense paid trip to…
Monticello, Arkansas and the University of Arkansas at Monticello! I know you’re jealous. Go Fighting Weevils! The tournament is just 3 days, but it takes a full day to fly to Memphis and drive 200 miles SOUTH to Monticello. Still jealous?

I’m excited for this trip and to spend time with Whitworth students and to see a state I never imagined I’d be visiting. I promise lots of tweeting and instagrams along the way!

Less Vague, More Specific

10.04.2012 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’ve been getting a lot of requests to “pick my brain” lately. And what I thought was a summer thing has turned into a fall activity for folks as well. I’m always happy to talk to other people, and if you have the courage or inclination to ask for a meeting, I’m not going to say no. BUT make sure you tell me what’s going on.

Yesterday I got an email asking to talk to me for 15-20 minutes about a product this company is working on they think I’m a target market for. Sure, happy to help a cool sounding start-up.

Today I got an email from someone asking to setup time to chat. We’re connected through a LinkedIn group- which is great, but let’s be a bit more specific. A one sentence vague email, not as eager to get stuck on the phone here. I’m sure it’ll end up being fine, but remember to be specific in your requests.
