September means the Emmy’s and the beginning of fall TV season in the pop culture world. A lot of summer TV is wrapping up and a lot of new great shows are starting – let’s talk about that and more…
TV
My DVR is rarely empty for long, and when nothing jumps out at me I’ll head over to Netflix, or watch a bunch of Parks & Rec episodes (it’s always the right answer). This month I’ve been enjoying the Late Show with Stephen Colbert (rough start, but he’s hitting his stride, and I LOVE the music!) Married is back on FX. I somehow missed it when it came back so have gotten caught up on Season 2 in time for the finale this week. It’s very funny and a bit twisted…Speaking of which, You’re the Worst is back! I loved this show last summer and Season 2 is off to a great start! I’m almost finished with Narcos on Netflix which I’m enjoying, and now I want to go visit Columbia…
With the return of fall shows this past week I’m enjoying and looking forward to the return of The Big Bang Theory, Scandal, Brooklyn 99, Empire, Blackish, Homeland, Fargo, and a nice surprise on the DVR last night – Anthony Bourdain – Parts Unknown is back!
I’m not going to lie, I gave up on Fear the Walking Dead about half way through, it’s just too painful. But I can’t wait for The Walking Dead to return next month!
The new shows I’m checking out this fall…obviously The Muppets (looking forward to this hitting its stride in a few episodes…), Life in Pieces (I love Colin Hanks, and the format is new), The Grinder (yay Rob Lowe & Fred Savage!), Grandfathered (it’s getting good reviews!), I added Quantico to the DVR and we’ll see if I like it and it survives the quantity of soapy-ness on my DVR. SuperGirl is sounding good and I’m excited to check it out later in October.
Alright – that’s way too much TV, what are you watching this fall?
Reading
I got caught up on comics in August and have been reading a few other graphic novels including Alex + Ada, which I liked the first 2 books of, but the 3rd book was very clearly “we’re done writing this now so let’s just wrap it up as quickly as possible.” which was a big bummer. There was a lot of potential for the series, and they crapped out on it. I didn’t like Hawkeye as much as I thought I was going to. Everyone raved about it, but it was too all over the place for me. I also didn’t care for The Fifth Beatle – which had the potential to be a great story about Brian Epstein, but again with the fizzling out at the end. If you’re a big Beatles fan it may still be worth a read (you can have my copy, just ask).
I finally picked up and started reading Go Set a Watchman – it’s a little slow but I’m powering through. I was recently at Powell’s (my husband’s least favorite sentence!) and picked up Undermajordomo Minor by Patrick DeWitt- I loved The Sisters Brothers, his last novel, and I am excited to read this one!
What are you reading this fall? My bookshelves are getting full, and I think some rainy weekends may be helpful to get my bookshelves in order.
Listening
The Nerdist has been on a roll lately, Rob Lowe, Felicia Day, Brian Regan, and Andrea Savage (who he used to date so that was a fun interview…). I’m currently listening to the Andy Daly episode (you should watch his show Review.)
As for Podcasts, I liked the first episode of Make Tech Human which was a great interview with Monica Lewinsky. I haven’t listened since, but I have the next episodes to tryout. I am WAY behind on Planet Money and Fresh Air, but I did catch the Jim Gaffigan interview on Fresh Air right before he performed for the Pope this past weekend.
And, thanks to Ellen I’ve had Rhianna in my head for a couple of weeks now…
What are you listening to this fall? Any other pop culture you’re enjoying lately?
