The Role of a Service Provider

04.07.2015 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

im-a-people-person-i-have-people-skillsAs a service provider it’s my responsibility to provide my service (sales & marketing consulting) to my clients (the expert in their business & their industry). My position means that I am often working with OTHER service providers. Sometimes that’s fantastic, and sometimes I can’t figure out why my client would ever hire that person. And after a couple of recent weird service provider to service provider interactions, I was thinking, we may need a reminder of our role.

Here’s the deal: the client hired us because they know they need what we do. They hired us to help with messaging, create a new ad, help with organizational structure, write-up policies and procedures, build a website, and a myriad of other services they need. They did NOT hire us to fix things that aren’t broken in their mind. Well, they did, they just don’t know it yet.

Is that a website that I’d be proud to have represent my company? Is that the logo and color scheme I’d use? Is that messaging really representative of what they’re doing? Maybe not, but they love it. It’s our job as service providers to come along side our clients and have those conversations “what do you think about your messaging?” “How do you feel about your website design/content/layout,” “How do you feel about your branding?” They aren’t FUN conversations to have with your client, but if this is what they hired you for, then they’re ready for it.

Sometimes that’s NOT what they hired you for though. Sometimes you need to gently ask the questions and when they say no, you need to drop it. At least for the time being. I have this happen a lot with clients. It’s not in the budget, the designer is a friend, they paid a lot of money for whatever, it’s gonna stay put for the time being.

So, here’s a few things that based on my recent experiences I think we should be reminded of when working with our clients. Also, remember this when you’re working with other service providers on a client. You never know who has they client’s ear, and getting fired because you were a jerk to another service provider can happen…

The Role of a Service Provider:

  • Provide solutions and services within your scope of work and breadth of knowledge
  • Work WITH your client to develop and implement their vision (you’re their to guide, get your own thing)
  • Offer recommendations and options based on your clients needs
  • Complete requested tasks by the client
  • Make suggestions on opportunities or changes needed within the organization
  • Provide SERVICE (ie: don’t be a dick)

March Pop Culture Roundup! It’s a Miracle!

03.31.2015 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Well, March sure wasn’t lacking in pop culture events – especially on TV! Here’s a few things that have been keeping me entertained this month, and please share yours in the comments!

Reading

I shouldn’t read as much TV commentary as I do. Alan Sepinwall always manages to remind me of why I love a show, he often catches something I missed or thought wasn’t important and he’s a nice guy unlike some many others in his field who seem to enjoy talking crap about a show or actor or network.

Comics! I found a new comic book shop in Beaverton so my box is continually being filled and I haven’t skipped a beat. I’m still enjoying The Walking Dead, Lazarus, Outcast, and Ms. Marvel. In a couple of recent Loot Crates I received a Orphan Black comic and the new Star Wars comic I need to check out.

I also got a copy of Ready Player One in my recent LootCrate box and although I read the book a couple years ago it was a good reminder of how AMAZING it is!

Listening

I can’t wait for the new Alabama Shakes album to come out in a couple of weeks. I’ve already pre-ordered it and I’m enjoying the new singles, but hoping the album has something as rockin’ as Heavy Chevy on this album…

As per the usual, my podcasts are going strong. I’m always entertained with As Me Another, and just this morning I finished the Kal Penn interview on The Nerdist podcast and was really enjoying how cool Kal is! He’s done a lot of great things in his career, it’s worth a listen even if you don’t like movies, he talked a lot about working for the Obama Administration which was really interesting! The Grantland Hollywood Prospectus always has good stuff, from the weekly HP pod, to a great interview lately with former White House Senior Advisor, Dan Pfeiffer! The Fresh Air interview with the Sea World trainer/whistle blower was also really interesting, and you’ll never go to SeaWorld again!

Watching

My DVR has been keeping busy this month!

Broad City- I love this show, and it certainly is a targeted demographic but man alive I love it. Hannibal Burress as the dentist and occasional boyfriend is always a welcome site on any show he’s on. Plus the show’s added bonus of my brother and I texting each other random quotes while we watch is always fun!

The Walking Dead- Okay, that finale happened…WOW. I still need to re-watch the episode, it was a late night after a long weekend of traveling, but WOW, next season is setup for some new bad guys and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to see the return of Morgan!

The Americans- I love this show so much. We’re over half way through the season and they haven’t “turned” their daughter yet, but I am confident the season will end with all hell breaking loose when she finds out who her parents are. They have some creepy storylines this year, not in a scary way but in a “oh man, I hope this doesn’t happen because yuck…” kind of way. I love this show so much!

Justified- so sad to know that Rayland Givens is almost done wearing that Stetson on my TV. This most recent episode has put a good twist into place for the final 3 episodes…I can’t wait to see the final Raylan/Boyd showdown! So curious who will live…

Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt- It’s a Miracle! Oh man this show is worth it for the theme song ALONE. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have done it again, and I am so curious what S2 will look like when they aren’t writing for network TV as they had with S1. I really like Ellie Kemper and she does an AMAZING job of playing someone trapped in an underground bunker/cult for 14 years. If you liked 30 Rock or laughing, or life, this is for you!

There’s been other great TV I’m enjoying this spring including re-watching Orphan Black to get ready for the S3 premier in April, and Bloodline on Netflix, which stars Coach Taylor and Lindsey Weir, so even if it goes terribly wrong I’ll watch it all!

Make New Friends, But Keep the Old…

03.27.2015 by Elizabeth // 1 Comment

Seattle Cider Basil MintIn a new town you have to make new friends, find your go to places and get into a new routine. I’m doing okay with all of this (I promise.) One of my new favorite places is the local taphouse. It’s dog friendly, so Hank loves it, they have AMAZING beer on tap which helps since I’m really missing my Beer Geek Girl crew and discovering new bars and beers. And because I’m active on Twitter and so are they, I’ve gotten to know the owner (it’s how I found them in the first place!)

Last week I was in and we were talking about cider, which I love. I asked if they ever get Seattle Cider, a cider company in Seattle (obviously) that I really love and miss and can’t find as readily down here. He said no, he hadn’t heard of them. The next morning on Twitter the owner tweeted that he had a present for me when I’m in next.

So now I’m sitting in the taphouse writing this post and in my bag is a fabulous cider from Seattle Cider I’ve been DYING to try and now get to because I made new friends, talked to strangers, AND told them what I want.

I always tell you guys I can’t help you if I don’t know what you need, and if I don’t know you’re out there. Sure it’s a bottle of cider, but hey, what cool stuff have you gotten lately because you made a new friend?
