Which SC&P Employee are You?

06.26.2013 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

imgresI LOVE Mad Men, and Sunday’s finale did NOT disappoint. And if you haven’t finished the season yet, stop right here.

You’ve been warned.

Don Draper is a terrible team player and employee. Sending him on an indefinite “Break” was exactly what he needed. Well, he needed to be fired, but he’s a partner so can’t be. He’s selfish, pompous, and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. Awesome qualities in a coworker AND boss.

And after the Season 6 finale I realized, CRAP. I’m Don Draper.  If I don’t want to do something, I don’t. If I think it’s a bad idea, I won’t waste my time on it. If I think something is a great idea, I’ll push for it.

It’s THE biggest reason I started my own company. It’s not fair to other people to have to deal with my Draper-esque tendencies (plus, scotch for breakfast is awesome! kidding!) And it got me thinking…

What Mad Men Character makes you uncomfortable because it hits too close to home?

Do you get too invested in your work and forget to have a life like Peggy?

Are you so desperate for your boss’s attention that you step on the people below you like Pete?

Are you destined for middle management and just doing your job until you get shot in the face like Ken?

Have you been there for ever and are just showing up for the paycheck like Roger?

Are you the new guy and a total brown noser trying to make it like Bob Benson (my favorite new character/mystery this season!)

Will you do anything the company asks to create security for you and your child like Joan?

Are you neurotic and afraid of getting fired all the time like Ginsberg?

June Pop Culture Round Up

06.21.2013 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

busterbluthAlright folks, it’s that time of the month again, when I share what I’m reading, watching and listening to. Here’s a few things that I am finding interesting, and you might as well!

Reading

My dad handed me his copy of The Sisters Brothers and said it’s the best book he’s read this year. I’m half way through and REALLY loving it! It’s not the kind of book I’d ever think I’d like (a western about two brothers who are hired killers in Oregon Country), but man it’s a great story so far! Will give you the results next month…

I also have been catching up on some comics as usual, and finally read Thief of Thieves, ANOTHER suggestion from my dad (yeah, he knows me well!) and it was a cool graphic novel! It’s the same author as The Walking Dead but the subject matter couldn’t be more different. If you like a good heist book, this is it.

Watching

Holy cow the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones was intense! I can’t believe it!

I also power watched Arrested Development‘s new season, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Sure the Lindsay episodes were terrible, but as a whole I thought it was good, I was so glad to see the Bluth’s back in action, and that final scene was great.

My husband and I discovered House of Cards because of our new Netflix addiction, and wow it’s awesome. We haven’t binge-watched it yet, but that’s mostly because we’ve been busy!

This summer I tend to pick a TV series that I have wanted to watch but never got around to. I’m going to start with Battlestar Galactica and then hopefully watch Breaking Bad so I’m caught up for the end of the series later this summer.

I also can’t wait for the final season of Dexter coming up, and a new show on NBC called Camp looks pretty funny for some light summer watching.

Listening

I’m a bigger fan of podcasts when I drive than listening to music or the radio. Lately I enjoyed the Rick Moranis interview on The Nerdist podcast.

I also caught the Patent Troll podcast from This American Life, which was great, and finally got me back into This American Life podcasts.

And if you’re looking for a good business podcast, the guys at The Boss Show, are local and do great 20-30 minute podcasts. It’s the perfect commute podcast!

So there you have it- what are you listening to, watching and reading this month?

May Pop Culture Roundup

05.17.2013 by Elizabeth // 2 Comments

129149_459331_40I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed sharing my pop culture obsessions of the moment with you guys last month. So I think we’ll keep it up. It’s season finale time, which means bad summer reality TV and more time on the patio with a good beer and a good book. I can’t wait! Here’s what’s going on in my pop culture world right now, make sure to share yours in the comments!

Reading

As you may have heard, May 4th was Free Comic Book Day. And yes, I did get up early, drove to my comic book shop in Kirkland and landed a BUNCH of free comics. It was AWESOME. You get a bunch of free comics to check out and learn about some stuff you might enjoy! Here’s what I liked: Ultimate Spider-man, Mouse Guard (and it had a cool secret Fraggle Rock Comic!), Jonathan Kellerman- “The Web” (I now REALLY want to read this book!), The Walking Dead (okay, was kind of disappointed that they just took 3 back stories and put them together, BUT I love TWD), and my biggest surprise was The Steam Engines of Oz. I can’t wait for what’s in store next year! I also discovered a great Sesame Street Comic that teaches kids HOW to read comics. I bought a couple copies (it wasn’t free) for 2 kids in my life who need to learn comics from someone, I decided it’ll be me.

I just finished Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore. It was GREAT. It got me excited for my trip to Paris this summer and re-ignited my love of art! Double Whammy Score!

Now it’s time to figure out the next book to read, I have a bookshelf full of suggestions, but I really just want to read Dad is Fat so may pick that up this weekend. Or I’ll finally read Alison Bechdel’s Are You My Mother.

Listening

Nothing new has jumped out at me lately. I need to listen to more Justin Timberlake since I’m heading to the stadium concert in BC this summer! I’ve also been listening to a lot of Eric Hutchinson and James Morrison, it’s probably the rain. Any new albums you’re loving lately?

Watching

It’s season finale time, and I have to say, while The Office has been so bad since Steve Carrell’s last season, these past 3 episodes have been pretty great, I’m excited for the series finale and wedding episode (I know, didn’t watch it last night, already caught a few spoilers, grrr!)

I loved New Girl’s Finale, I need to stop watching The Mindy Project (it’s just not funny, or very good), I can’t wait for Nashville’s finale either! And Parks & Recreation did a great job of setting up Season 6. Every year they’ve been so scared of getting canceled they make the season finale able to serve as a series finale. I was excited they didn’t do that this year.

For the next month I’ll be plugging through Game of Thrones & Mad Men still. I can’t get enough. Plus, bear fights are awesome! And I can’t wait for the final season of Dexter.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the up fronts this week and it sounds like some pretty great shows will be coming out this fall. I’m most excited for the Michael J Fox show and Andy Samberg’s new show.

And, I finally watched Pitch Perfect this weekend. I need to apologize for taking so long to finally watch this movie. It was AWESOME. If you like music and general pop culture geekiness, you should see this. Don’t let the competitive acapella world distract you, It’s great!

This weekend is all about Star Trek, and I may finally see Iron Man 3 next week. As I get older I seem to become more of a junior high boy in my tastes it seems like…

What are you reading, watching, listening to lately that you love? Share in the comments!
