Yellow Dog Pop Culture Roundup

04.12.2013 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

As many of you know, I’m a big pop culture fan. If you follow me on twitter, you are WELL aware of my nerdiness. So, I’ve decided to occasionally give you a glimpse into what I’m reading/watching/listening to in the pop culture arena. If you have suggestions of other things I should be checking out, feel free to share in the comments!

Reading

Sacre Bleu, Christopher Moore. My dad bought me this book for Christmas, and I’m finally reading it since I have a trip to Paris planned for August. It’s art history, comedy, and Paris all wrapped up in one. Two (soon to be three) of my favorite things!

The Walking Dead, I finally caught up with these graphic novels (Ezekiel has a Tiger!). If you like the TV show, or are frustrated with the show, or it scares the crap out of you so you think reading the comics will help you out, you’re correct, and should check out this great series. I picked up all the graphic novels at the library and am now going to my somewhat-local comic book store to buy the latest issue each month. I have reached that level of geekdom, and it is awesome.

Listening To

When my dad was up in March we went to see The Alabama Shakes (my dad is WAY cooler than your dad, FYI), and they were awesome. I’m listening to them a lot, and their opening act, Sam Doores and the Tumbleweeds. Again, awesome. I’m in love with the show Nashville, so a lot of my music is in that vain lately, The Lumineers, The Civil Wars, and others. Oh, and fun. has a great album I enjoy.

this hangs in my office. That mustache makes me smile daily.

I also listen to a lot of Podcasts. The latest discoveries include Pop Culture Happy Hour from NPR and You Made it Weird from Nerdist Industries. I still love the Nerdist Podcast and Grantland’s Hollywood Prospectus podcasts each week.

Watching

The Americans. This show is AWESOME. 80’s Russian spies living in DC, pretending to be married with 2 kids. It’s creepy, and awesome and so fun. I love it!

Nashville. I jumped right on this bandwagon in the fall and it has not disappointed. Yes it’s soapy and over the top, but the music is fun and there is a plethora of pretty people to look at.

New Girl. I can’t get enough, I love this show. I watch every episode twice because I’m laughing so hard the first time. It’s great.

Parks & Recreation. If you watch the show then it shouldn’t surprise you that I am in love with Ron Swanson and his libertarian values and awesome mustache. This is easily my favorite show on TV. I watch each episode twice, for the same reason as New Girl. Everything about it is sweet and funny and has had the odd effect of making me reach out to my city hall when I have a question or need something taken care of. I’m not to the Ann Perkins level yet, but could be soon.

What are you listening to?

04.11.2012 by Elizabeth // 2 Comments

I’ve always been the kind of person who’s in my car all the time. When you live in Issaquah you just get use to driving. I’ve tried listening to podcasts before and none really jumped out at me. But in the last year I’ve really gotten into it, and now I don’t pull out of my garage without turning on a podcast. If you’re tired of annoying radio ads and looking for something to fuel your pop culture needs, here’s a few I enjoy:

WTF with Marc Maron

Marc gets really incredible actors and comedians to come into his garage and talk about all sorts of things. The first 10 minutes of his interview with Molly Shannon might make you drive off the road- just know you were warned.

The Nerdist Podcast

As a self proclaimed Nerd/Geek I always enjoy this podcast with Chris Hardwick, who talks about all things pop culture when it comes to sci-fi, tech, and comedy. He interviews great actors and comedians as well. The interview last week with Marc Maron is a great place to learn a lot about both of them.

The Hollywood Prospectus

My brother Jake sent me this podcast as they were just starting out. 2 guys who write for Grantland have a weekly podcast where they talk about TV and movies. It’s always entertaining, often it makes me feel better for not loving the new hot HBO series (although I do love me some Game of Thrones!) and they even introduced me to Bent, a very short lived NBC show that you should check out.

So there you have it, a few great podcasts you can add to the MP3 device of your choice, and let me know if you have others you enjoy listening to, or find one here you like! Plus it’ll give us more to talk about the next time I see you…

A few treats from Hank

12.22.2011 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

The worlds greatest lab
Not everyone gets in the Christmas spirit I guess

This morning I was excited to see my favorite blog feature Hank as the photo of the day. If you know me, you know that I LOVE pop culture. When I worked at USA Today I discovered Pop Candy, a daily blog about all things pop culture. It is the one blog I read every day, and when I forget, I can tell my day is off.

In case you missed the newsletter with Hank’s Stocking ideas, I thought I’d re-post them here for you today. Have a great Christmas (or non Christmas winter holiday if that’s how you celebrate), we look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Hank’s Favorite Stocking Stuffers

When I talk about Hank, I always tell folks, we know he’s spoiled, we promise he’ll be our only child. Hank runs the Case household and he knows it! So it’s no surprise that during the holiday season he gets the biggest stocking! Here’s a few stocking stuffers Hank thinks your dog would also like:

  • Tennis Balls (and a chuck-it if you don’t have one…no use touching a slobbery ball when you don’t have to!)
  • Bully Sticks: This is Hank’s all time favorite treat – and the only treat that lasts him more than 2 minutes.
  • Cheese: ANYTHING with cheese, he especially enjoys Tillamook Sharp Cheddar. Snob.
  • Poop bags: You know you need them, might as well stock up while you’re thinking about it.
