A couple of weeks ago I needed to do something that I didn’t want to do in my business. I talked with my coach to see if there was any way I could just be Pacific Northwest Passive Aggressive and not actually have to do what I knew I needed to buck up and do. She called me out and told me I had to put on my big girl pants and do it. But I drug my feet, and tried a partial PNWPA tactic which got me almost no where. So finally after 2 weeks I did what needed to be done. And it wasn’t horrible. AND I got the response I needed and closure within 2 hours.
I was in Houston two weeks ago judging a debate tournament with the incredible Forensics team from Whitworth University. One night I was talking with one of the students about a relationship that needed to change. We talked and talked, and one of the other students in the room said “you’re being redundant can we be done?” – the student with the question started to understand and we got to a place where the student knew what needed to be done. The next day after we all got back to the Northwest I got a text from the student that they did what they knew needed to be done, and they felt relieved and were so grateful for the push.
Being an adult BLOWS sometimes. No one wants to do the crappy parts of their job, or life. Firing a client, nagging someone about doing their job, telling a client their “baby” is ugly. It’s not fun, BUT we signed up for this as a business owner and contributing member of society. So, next time that crap ends up on your task list, take care of it first. It’s pretty awesome how relieving it is when it’s over – way better than the week I spent dragging my feet and trying not to do it…
