Two times in three days I have had a conversation with someone about the creepy way people act around you when they mostly know you through social media.
I have a lot of great stories about how social media is awesome. It’s gotten me new business, it’s lead to new friendships, media opportunities and event tips on new cool restaurants that I now love.
However, the conversation I have had lately is “why do people think they know you if they only ever “talk”, or even just follow, you on social media?”
There are many reasons I’m not on Facebook, but as I’ve said before, if I want to know what’s going on with you, or see pictures of your baby, I’ll ask. Social Media is being used as an excuse to not talk to each other and it’s not okay.
If you want to have a relationship with me, then pick up the phone and call me, or send me an email and check in with me. We’re all vain and selfish people. The only news you’re going to get about someone is the good stuff. Or the “pity me” stuff. Start paying attention to this.
No one ever says “wow I really screwed up at work today and my boss SHOULD have yelled at me for it.” Instead they say “Boss is in a fowl mood and taking it out on me, what a jerk.”
Social media is only going to give you a small one sided glimpse as to what’s going on in someone’s life. If you really want to know what’s going on with them, ASK.
