Guest Post: 3 Ways to Use Canva for Your Business

01.10.2018 by Elizabeth // 2 Comments

One of the best things I did in 2017 was take a 5 day Canva Crash Course from my pal Emily Roach at Biz BFF. I knew Canva was a great tool but, it was overwhelming and, artistic and creative aren’t words used to describe me. I was thrilled to learn Emily is repeating her Canva Crash Course – starting January 22nd! You don’t want to miss this!

If anyone tells you that graphic design doesn’t really matter, they are straight up lying to you.

Sure, we may not consciously choose a business because we think, “Wow, their last instagram post was so well-designed,” or “I just love their font choice.” But if you’ve ever left a website because it looks like it was designed in 1992, or scrolled on past a Facebook post because you couldn’t make out the image, or quit reading a sales page because it was just paragraph after paragraph of monotonous text–then you know design matters.

But what’s a busy business owner supposed to do? We already have to be our own CEOs, CFOs, marketing agents, copywriters, and customer service reps… now we have to be graphic designers, too?!

If you’re already breaking into a cold sweat at the thought of designing your own social media images, don’t panic. There’s a super awesome design program that’s easy to use and totally free: Canva.

Canva is a web-based program (that also has an iphone, ipad, and android app available) that will turn even the most art-phobic entrepreneur into a designer in minutes. Canva includes hundreds of professionally-designed templates that you can customize with your content, colors, and photos in a snap. You can also start from scratch and build your own designs effortlessly. The possibilities are endless!

Here are 3 ways to use Canva to create eye-catching designs for your business:

Design click-worthy social media images

Make your own business cards

Your Newsletter Pre-Send Checklist

01.03.2018 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Your Newsletter Pre-Send ChecklistBefore you hit send on your latest (or returning) newsletter this month – I wanted to share my pre-send checklist with you. It’s just a few things that ensure you don’t hit send followed by screaming an expletive of your choice at the screen (as can happen to the best of us!)

  • Is Your Subject Line Updated? My subject line stays partially the same (Yellow Dog News:) and then changes based on what my 3 things are for the month. This is something I usually catch when I send myself a test email. Luckily with MailChimp’s recent updates to the setup, I find this easier to catch early!
  • Social Media Sharing Setup – One thing I like about MailChimp is they will automatically post your newsletter to Facebook & Twitter. Making sure that your newsletter is set to publish ASAP to your social profiles only ensures more people will read the fantastic content you spent so much time writing! (Pro-Tip: Add the social media sharing icons to your footer and make sure to share to your other social profiles once you hit send!)
  • Check Your Links! There’s a link checker function for a reason. I HATE when I send out something and the link doesn’t work like it’s supposed to. Just today I received a “correction” email from a large company because the first one had the wrong links in an email. Take a moment to check your links!
  • Read Your Newsletter – Take a minute to review your content and make sure it makes sense. Does the content flow? Does that sentence sound awkward to you? Maybe you need to have a friend or significant other read it. This is especially helpful if you know you sometimes end up writing in industry jargon. No one will take the time to google your ridiculous acronyms (TBH).
  • Check Your Images – Make sure that your images are properly linked to your website or blog post or the article they represent. AND make sure you include alt text with your images.
  • Is Your List Updated? Before each newsletter goes out I make sure that anyone who’s joined my list from another sign up form is added in. I also make sure that new clients and prospects are added into my newsletter. This is REALY easy because MailChimp integrates with Zoho (my CRM) and Freshbooks (my bookkeeping system). Take a moment to make sure your list is up to date so that everyone who SHOULD get your newsletter does get it!

What else do you make sure to check before you hit send on your newsletter?

December Pop Culture Round Up

12.22.2017 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

december pop culture round upIt’s the most wonderful time of the year to be a Star Wars fan isn’t it? I don’t know about you but I’ve see The Last Jedi twice so far and it lived up to the hype! Besides Star Wars it’s been a good month for pop culture diversions, here’s a few of my favorites…

Reading

Sadly I haven’t read much except Entertainment Weekly and Year End Lists this month. I’m hoping to get one more book in by the end of the year, and my comics are over flowing right now…

I have started getting Brian Stelter’s nightly newsletter – Reliable Sources. He does a great job of recapping the news so I don’t have to watch it. He also throws in some good pop culture and Hollywood news which I always appreciate.

Listening

I saw Billy Joel again this year! He is SUCH a fun concert and I had a great time (as I did when I saw him in 2016). Everyone sings way too loud (or maybe that’s just me) along with him and a great time is had by all. If you get the chance, go see him!

I signed up for Cards Against Humanity Saves America this year, their holiday “gift” is always amazing. The give away a ton of money and do some good stuff. BONUS – you get really inappropriate new CAH cards. This year because of all the bad news out there they started The Good News Podcast. It lives up to the promise each episode. Very clever, and very short. A good post- The Daily listen.

I’m almost done with Young Charlie. Between Young Charlie and The Watch they’re my mental health check’s from listening to too many political podcasts. We have a holiday road trip this weekend and I’m excited to finally check out Origins – which is all about the Origins of a TV show or program. Their first season was about Curb Your Enthusiasm (which I didn’t watch so didn’t listen to) but this season is about ESPN. I think my husband may be interested in this one too…

A friend of mine also suggested Oh No Ross & Carrie – where they try a bunch of different things, including religion. I’m looking forward to checking it out, especially their Scientology episodes…

Watching

Tis the season to catch up on a lot of binge worthy shows on TV and on streaming…

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) is a really fun show you should watch over the holidays. It’s clever and funny and the same creator of Gilmore Girls. However it’s made for streaming not TV, so there will be swearing (and “brief nudity”- your mother’s been warned)

I am LOVING The Runaways (Hulu). It’s a Marvel comic series about a group of normal kids in LA who discover their parents are super villains. It’s AWESOME. The creators of the show also did The OC and Gossip Girl – so it’s beautiful people in beautiful settings doing not so beautiful things. BONUS: There’s a religious cult – my favorite!

If you haven’t watched Mindhunter (Netflix) yet – get on it. It was AMAZING. I really really enjoyed it.

We watched the Jeremiah Tower episode of Anthony Bourdain and it was incredible! As a big food nerd I was shocked that I didn’t know this story at ALL. He has led a crazy life with some incredible twists and turns. Don’t watch on an empty stomach…

Top Chef is back!!! The perfect winter show to keep you hungry and happy during a dark cold winter. I’m not sure who’s taking home top prize but I’m rooting for the gal from Alaska!

I’m taking the last week of the year off and plan to finally finish this season of Mr. Robot and s2 of  The Crown. I watched the pilot of Godless and it was OK, I might come back to it because it’s showing up on some end of year lists…

I of course saw Star Wars The Last Jedi and loved it. It was LONG and I was disappointed that the Master Codebreaker wasn’t who they teased it was…But SO DANG GREAT.
