Hey Experts: Show Don’t Tell

imgresA friend of mine tweeted a question the other day about a new fad in Social Media she’s seeing. She said social media “experts” were doing it and she wondered if it was working. And it got me thinking, if you have to put EXPERT in your title, you probably aren’t.

If you truly are an expert in your industry, show me, don’t tell me. Share quality content on social media and give me helpful information that will guide me. Don’t tell me that I should hire you because you’re the best, show me what it’s like to work with you and how your mind works.

The reason my newsletter has 3 things in it every month is so folks get an idea of how my mind works. And it usually gives them something that they can work on. Of course I’m here to help (and that’s the goal right?), but some of that work they can do on their own. I am not the kind of person who hires people site unseen. And when I do, it doesn’t usually work out great.

Next time you see “expert” next to a name or in a social media description, check to see if they show you, or tell you.

Is Your Website Losing You Business?

imagesI was looking for a new resource the other day and searched a few companies online. One company looked like a great fit and I wanted to ask a few questions. But NO WHERE on the website could I email them, just call or sign up for their newsletter. So I went back to the search results and went to the second site. Sure enough I could email them (albeit at a Comcast email address, which is another pet peeve…) and I did and asked my questions. I received a great response this morning and will be meeting with them in the next couple of weeks.

It’s Simple: People want to do business on their time in their own way. Sometimes they’ll find you through social media, sometimes online, but make sure that your prospects can find you and communicate with you the way they want to.

Is Your Smile Scary?

Morning Walk time!Hank & I were on our morning walk today and ran into a dog from the neighborhood. This puppy has grown up fast and is super cute, but still in training so the owner often crosses the street when we’re walking so the dog won’t get distracted. This morning though the owner had the dog move to the side of the sidewalk and sit. And then he started to smile and show ALL his teeth, kind of in a Cujo way…So, I pulled Hank a little closer and we walked towards the dog, but the new dog didn’t bark, and when Hank couldn’t help himself (and I couldn’t hold him back) he went over to sniff the dog and it was JUST FINE.

How often do we have a “scary smile” in our business that shows all our teeth and scares off the competition when all you’re trying to do is win them over? Scary Smiles can be all kinds of things:

  • Selling yourself too hard to a prospective client in the first meeting
  • Immediately following and interacting on ALL social media (one at a time please…)
  • Asking for a coffee appointment when you don’t explain well what the purpose is
  • Pushing for the sales
  • Over-follow up

Sure as we get closer we realize you won’t bite or growl, but taking it down a notch may help us from crossing the street.
