June Pop Culture Round Up!

06.26.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Fargo-TV-showWe’re coming up on a long weekend, where sitting on a patio or beach with a good book, an excellent playlist, and movies/tv to help sooth the sunburn are needed. Here’s a few of my top recommendations from the past month!

Reading

I finally finished The 5th Wave, and it wasn’t great. If you liked The Hunger Games (which I did) you might enjoy it. But whiney girly 14 year olds aren’t my favorite.

But then, I read Night Film in just a few days while on vacation earlier this month. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Scary, interesting, pop culture infused, it was great. I loved the author’s first book, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, and this was right up my alley!

Hyperbole and a Half – wow, I haven’t laughed so hard at stories that reminded me way too much of myself in a LONG time. This graphic novel-ish book is so funny and quirky and easy to pick up and put down. A perfect fun summer read!

Watching

Orange is the New Black – Season 2 was somehow better than Season 1, I devoured this season and am so sad I have to wait another year to see what happens next. Good grief this show is fantastic!

Fargo- I know I mentioned this show last month, but that series finale was INCREDIBLE. Hurry up and watch it before FX hides it from us (seriously FX, can you help a fan out? on demand, on your site, netflix, amazon instant? I’d take ONE of these!). The fact that it was a self contained story was so wonderful, and Colin Hanks continues to be one of my favorite underdog actors!

Game of Thrones- Best Fathers Day episode ever.

Coming up on my DVR…Tyrant, The Bridge, The Leftovers, Masters of Sex, and finally binge watching Friday Night Lights this summer…

Listening

The Black Keys- I love this band, and their new album is a great for a road trip!

This American Life: The Radio Drama Episode– WOW, the first “drama” wasn’t amazing, but the 21 Jump Street Musical, new Mike Birbiglia & Sashir Zamata radio play were all fantastic!

And When You Complain, You Get What You Need…

06.24.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

IMG_6645If you read my newsletter last week (and if you didn’t, fix that!), then you know I bought a new car a couple of weeks ago and had a great buying experience, but not a fabulous follow through experience. So, I thought today (for those interested…) I’d share what happened next…

Last week I got the follow up survey, where I’d been “coached” to give all 10’s to my sales guy. And guess what? I didn’t give all 10’s!

Why? Because he didn’t deserve it- the sales processes doesn’t end just because you got my money, I still had 3 days to return the car, plus lots of friends in my future to sing praises or heed warning about you dude.

Not 15 minutes after I submitted my survey did I have an email in my inbox from the sales rep…

Good morning.  I just came back from vacation today and just received the survey you just filled out which came back as a failing score.  I am sorry this happened and you felt this way.  I have some answers to your questions however:

The answers were great and totally answered my questions. If only his back up person had been this helpful…

And here’s a good lesson to learn: When you go on vacation, make sure that your back up person really has your back.

Guest Post: Love Your Pitch!

06.19.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

elevator-pitch-banner-4Today’s Guest Blog post is from my pal Dr. Michelle Mazur of Relationally Speaking. She’s launching an awesome new program, Love Your Pitch, to help you create the elevator pitch of your dreams!

I’d heard Betsy’s elevator pitch at least 100 times. She’s one of my business besties.

I knew she was smart, had big ideas about her industry, and I knew her clients LOVED her.

The problem: I had NO idea exactly what she did or who she did it for.

If you threatened to cancel the next season of The Walking Dead and the only way you’d stop is if I told you what Betsy did for a living. I guess I’d never find out what was going on in Terminus.

The worst part is I wanted to refer her, to recommend her, meet people and think  “Oh, I NEED to introduce you to Betsy.”

But I couldn’t because I didn’t know how she served people.

Frankly, she was missing out because on business, clients, and cash!  If I – one of her business BFFs couldn’t talk about her biz – no one could!

Why was her pitch leaving me so utterly confused?

Jargon kills elevator pitches

I was helping one business owner who said she worked with “women on the verge.”

One the verge of what? Insanity? Success? Moving to Jamaica?

I had no idea what she meant – worse I couldn’t access my mental Rolodex and see if I knew anyone who would be a good fit.

So I told her “Imagine your favorite client and now describe her”

“Oh that’s easy. She’s about ready to leave her corporate gig and jump into entrepreneurship full-time”

And there it was…

Hot damn!

Now, I can access my mental Rolodex and see if I know anyone who fits.

If the person you’re talking to can’t visualize who it is you serve, you’re failing the mental Rolodex test. Lose the jargon and describe who you serve in simple, relatable terms.

If after hearing your elevator pitch, someone can’t tell you exactly what you do, who you serve and the results of your business, it’s time to ditch that elevator pitch.

Are you looking to craft an elevator pitch that feel 100% like you, doesn’t leave people confused, and creates conversation and connection? Check out Love Your Pitch because when you know how to talk about what you do you transform business buddies into business advocates.
