Make time to DO the Work

11.13.2012 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

What solves my humbug mood? The Muppet Christmas Carol of course!

I always forget until it’s here that I’m actually NOT a big fan of the holiday season. There’s so much scheduling and planning and hunting down the right gifts, holiday party after party, pretending to be merry when really all I want to do is lay on the couch and have a Doctor Who marathon.

AND in the midst of it all, I have WORK to get done! I somehow have overwhelmed my schedule for November and so getting a day at home (today) to get caught up on the work I have to do is much needed and a relief. My goal is to have 2 days at home a week to DO the work. Lately it’s turned into one day, or even “just one quick meeting” which takes me away from home for a solid 2 hours.

I am sure once Christmas day arrives I’ll be in a better mood (plus we’re staying here this year, YAY) and less Ebenezer about the whole thing. In the mean time, I’m being selfish with my schedule, saying no to things that I maybe should say yes to, and making sure that I’m getting the work done.

How are you prioritizing your clients and your work during this more than usual chaotic season?

Take a Field Trip

07.13.2012 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

The view at Allium

The summer is an easy time to make excuses- it’s nice out, the sun is shining, Hank wants a walk, and then he wants to go lay on the patio and sun bathe- it’s easy to get distracted from getting your job done. I can make an excuse to not do ANYTHING I don’t want to do. On Monday I took the day off to drive to Orcas Island and visit my friend Lisa who owns Allium, the greatest restaurant EVER. It’s worth a 16-hour day of driving and ferries and traffic for a meal here, trust me. And the day away was JUST what I needed.

I drove up with my friend Karen at One Smart Cookie Marketing, who I don’t get to spend much time with, she also has a marketing firm, but we focus on different market segments so we were talked about strategy, best practices, what’s working, and what’s not. I realized that getting out of town can be really great for my business. Pick a topic, pick a friend and take a field trip. It’s amazing what a day away from work can do for your business.

And rewarding yourself with an incredible meal with 6 other friends doesn’t hurt.

Need a day away?- I highly recommend a trip to Orcas & Allium…

The Holiday Vacation Excuse

07.02.2012 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Summer in SeattleIt’s easy to drag along in the summer. We make the excuse that everyone’s on vacation, so I will too. But bills still have to be paid, most people don’t take the WHOLE month off, and while the 4th of July falling on a Wednesday kind of screws up the week, a lot of people stick around. After all, summer doesn’t start in Seattle until July 5th!

What are you doing this week and month to grow your business? What prospects do you need to check in on? What client do you need to schedule a 2nd half of the year conversation with? What work aren’t you getting done because you’ve been “too busy”? If it’s really a quiet week, you should have PLENTY of time to get through at least one of those projects you’ve been pushing off.

Hop to it folks! The sun will be out in a few days, and we all know how useless this town gets when that happens! Need some accountability? Let me know, I’m happy to check in with you!
