Please Empower Your Employees

07.08.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Hank relaxing in Central OregonWhile on vacation this 4th of July, my husband and I decided to stay in a hotel with Hank on our drive down to Oregon. No problem, I had researched some hotels that would take our large dog (which I never get because he’s old and lazy and I’ve seen 10 lb dogs do a lot more destruction…). I got on my phone, called the hotel made the reservation, mentioned my large dog, no problem, all set. Fast forward to 10 pm when I arrive at the hotel…No record of a dog on the reservation, and the only dog friendly room left is a smoking room, so not going to work for us. The gal at the desk says she can call her manager, no answer. “sorry, he didn’t answer.” Sure, so if you need a manager to make any decisions WHY ISN’T THE MANAGER ON DUTY RIGHT NOW!???

I’m NOT happy as I’m sure you can imagine. So, we drive across the street to another hotel. I knew they had some pet friendly rooms, and recalled they may have a size limit. I go to the front desk, and explain my story. No problem, pet friendly, non smoking, you’re set. OH but they do have a size limit. So she calls her boss who doesn’t answer. Then she says “you know, I see dogs way over the weight limit here, if someone stops you just tell them I said it was fine.” And off we go to our room where Hank is the perfect hotel guest (except for hogging the bed) and we had NO PROBLEM. And now I’ll always find a way to stay at The Holiday Inn, screw you crappy Days Inn.

Here’s the thing: you need to empower your employees. If only a manager can make the call on something, then you need a manager around. But that front desk gal at 10pm on a Wednesday night knew that Hank would be fine, and just wanted to go to bed. She knew it wasn’t the end of the world to stretch the rules 35 pounds. EMPOWER, don’t let them place blame. If you can’t trust your employees, then you need to work the night shift.

And When You Complain, You Get What You Need…

06.24.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

IMG_6645If you read my newsletter last week (and if you didn’t, fix that!), then you know I bought a new car a couple of weeks ago and had a great buying experience, but not a fabulous follow through experience. So, I thought today (for those interested…) I’d share what happened next…

Last week I got the follow up survey, where I’d been “coached” to give all 10’s to my sales guy. And guess what? I didn’t give all 10’s!

Why? Because he didn’t deserve it- the sales processes doesn’t end just because you got my money, I still had 3 days to return the car, plus lots of friends in my future to sing praises or heed warning about you dude.

Not 15 minutes after I submitted my survey did I have an email in my inbox from the sales rep…

Good morning.  I just came back from vacation today and just received the survey you just filled out which came back as a failing score.  I am sorry this happened and you felt this way.  I have some answers to your questions however:

The answers were great and totally answered my questions. If only his back up person had been this helpful…

And here’s a good lesson to learn: When you go on vacation, make sure that your back up person really has your back.

My Veterinarian: The Best Customer Service Rep Ever

05.13.2014 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

IMG_6426I love Hank’s veterinarian. She’s amazing. Every time we visit with her, she says hi to me and then gets down on the ground with Hank. She knows all his special quirks (no crates, he knows where the cheese is, he’s a wimp with needles, etc.). She follows up with us, and answers phone calls, and when you’re in a meeting with her, even with a packed waiting room, she’ll answer all our questions and act as if she has no where else to be.

Hank’s having a rough week and he’s spent some time with the Vet. I had a question the day we went to the vet and called towards the end of the day. She called me back after her day was over, and then said she’d leave Hank’s chart on her desk to check on him in the morning. Then she called back first thing in the morning to check on him from overnight.

She’s not getting paid for all this follow up from me. Every little question I have, every little anecdote about how he’s getting better or maintaining, or weirding me out, she listens to, and answers. She could be annoyed at what an overly cautious pet parent I’m being, but she’s not. She listens and answers and calms my neuroses about what’s going on.

Do you treat all your clients like this? I know I’m not this good with mine most of the time…
