Guest Post: The Myth of the Headshot

10.07.2015 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Britney GardnerToday’s Guest Post is by my pal Britney Gardner, a Visual Brand Strategist & Personal Brand Photographer. Before you schedule your next headshot appointment, make sure to read this!

At networking events, at conferences, in the elevator… we all need a succinct statement of what we do. For me I introduce myself as a personal branding strategist and photographer. In some circles, I receive a sea of nods and knowing smiles. In others, it’s more a collection of perplexed faces.

I could call myself a headshot photographer. I’d find myself with far more nods and much less confusion, but that wouldn’t be accurate. Why not? I don’t agree with the concept of “the headshot” when it comes to most small businesses. Definitely not for online entrepreneurs!

First of all, the word headshot implies a single photograph. More on that later, but for now, let’s go back to the origin of headshots. Remember, this is how a casting director chose people for auditions – it’s how they narrowed 200 down to ten. Casting for a particular part is driven first on looks, later on other things. And in the acting world, that works. But in the business world, we all hope to be considered first on skill, talent, personality… and concede they throw our looks into the pot later.

The myth of the headshot goes beyond just that, though. I haven’t met a single person for whom a single photograph would encompass all that they are. A person, like a business, is a multi-faceted thing. Even for an entrepreneur with the most narrow of niches, they need more than a single photo. My average client needs a photo for a horizontal banner on their website, an image for a poster, photos for online ads, blog posts, a cover photo for social media, and—yes—a photo that takes place of the traditional headshot for their social medial profile pictures. And for some of these categories, they need many options!

I like a headshot-like photo for my twitter profile, my Facebook profile. When I comment in groups, it’s a recognizable force as I move from place to place on Facebook. Beyond that, though, a variety of photos is the next big hurdle in the visual branding world. For some photo needs, a traditional headshot layout just won’t fit. Have you noticed how wide and short most website photos are? A square or vertical headshot has no place there. The wide photos are a cinematic space and perfect to show more of what it feels like to work with you.

image 2A collection of personal branding photos can build trust between you and the viewer. It can also turn them away. Marketing experts talk about building a tribe of people that follow you, people for whom shared interests are only a start. How can you do that with a single photo? When you show more of the real you in your business, you’ll be well on your way to attracting clients who get you. You’ll gain clients who want to see you succeed and are willing to invest in you.

Finding just one head and shoulders photograph to do all that? It’s impossible from a formatting point of view and difficult from an emotional or benefit realm. Instead of searching for the perfect photo, claim the perfect photo for a situation. Hire a photographer for a collection of photos that support your brand. Use a variety of photos across your online space. Become the expert, the first person people think of in your field, by employing a strategy with your branding.

Have you already seen a level of success in your business but know you’re ready to level up and need a little boost? I offer a Boost Your Brand strategy session to assess your current branding and plan the next steps for your business. I invite you to invest a small slice of time and photograph the business you want tomorrow, today.

September Pop Culture Roundup!

09.30.2015 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

this makes sense if you watched the Emmy'sSeptember means the Emmy’s and the beginning of fall TV season in the pop culture world. A lot of summer TV is wrapping up and a lot of new great shows are starting – let’s talk about that and more…

TV

My DVR is rarely empty for long, and when nothing jumps out at me I’ll head over to Netflix, or watch a bunch of Parks & Rec episodes (it’s always the right answer). This month I’ve been enjoying the Late Show with Stephen Colbert (rough start, but he’s hitting his stride, and I LOVE the music!) Married is back on FX. I somehow missed it when it came back so have gotten caught up on Season 2 in time for the finale this week. It’s very funny and a bit twisted…Speaking of which, You’re the Worst is back! I loved this show last summer and Season 2 is off to a great start! I’m almost finished with Narcos on Netflix which I’m enjoying, and now I want to go visit Columbia…

With the return of fall shows this past week I’m enjoying and looking forward to the return of The Big Bang Theory,  Scandal, Brooklyn 99, Empire, Blackish, Homeland, Fargo, and a nice surprise on the DVR last night – Anthony Bourdain – Parts Unknown is back!

I’m not going to lie, I gave up on Fear the Walking Dead about half way through, it’s just too painful. But I can’t wait for The Walking Dead to return next month!

The new shows I’m checking out this fall…obviously The Muppets (looking forward to this hitting its stride in a few episodes…), Life in Pieces (I love Colin Hanks, and the format is new), The Grinder (yay Rob Lowe & Fred Savage!), Grandfathered (it’s getting good reviews!), I added Quantico to the DVR and we’ll see if I like it and it survives the quantity of soapy-ness on my DVR. SuperGirl is sounding good and I’m excited to check it out later in October.

Alright – that’s way too much TV, what are you watching this fall?

Reading

I got caught up on comics in August and have been reading a few other graphic novels including Alex + Ada, which I liked the first 2 books of, but the 3rd book was very clearly “we’re done writing this now so let’s just wrap it up as quickly as possible.” which was a big bummer. There was a lot of potential for the series, and they crapped out on it. I didn’t like Hawkeye as much as I thought I was going to. Everyone raved about it, but it was too all over the place for me. I also didn’t care for The Fifth Beatle – which had the potential to be a great story about Brian Epstein, but again with the fizzling out at the end. If you’re a big Beatles fan it may still be worth a read (you can have my copy, just ask).

I finally picked up and started reading Go Set a Watchman – it’s a little slow but I’m powering through. I was recently at Powell’s (my husband’s least favorite sentence!) and picked up Undermajordomo Minor by Patrick DeWitt- I loved The Sisters Brothers, his last novel, and I am excited to read this one!

What are you reading this fall? My bookshelves are getting full, and I think some rainy weekends may be helpful to get my bookshelves in order.

Listening

The Nerdist has been on a roll lately, Rob Lowe, Felicia Day, Brian Regan, and Andrea Savage (who he used to date so that was a fun interview…). I’m currently listening to the Andy Daly episode (you should watch his show Review.)

As for Podcasts, I liked the first episode of Make Tech Human which was a great interview with Monica Lewinsky. I haven’t listened since, but I have the next episodes to tryout. I am WAY behind on Planet Money and Fresh Air, but I did catch the Jim Gaffigan interview on Fresh Air right before he performed for the Pope this past weekend.

And, thanks to Ellen I’ve had Rhianna in my head for a couple of weeks now…

What are you listening to this fall? Any other pop culture you’re enjoying lately?
