Super Fun Logistics of Public Speaking

12.05.2012 by Elizabeth // 1 Comment

Last week I was invited to speak at the Puget Sound Business Journal. Since I was paid to speak on their behalf for 4 years, it was just like going home. Except this time, the content was mine (or lovingly borrowed from others), I didn’t get paid and didn’t have to answer to anyone. It was kind of awesome.

I forgot how much I enjoy speaking to groups of people who just need someone to tell them they’re on the right track. Or they can stop doing what they hate, or they really SHOULD be following up on those leads because it’s free money waiting to happen (seriously, do you know how much money I have NOT given people???)

I received a follow up note from an attendee who is looking to do more public speaking and she made a couple of comments that I thought were worth noting.

1. I Don’t use PowerPoint. I do this for a couple reasons. The real reason is that I don’t want to BUILD the presentation! However, I also don’t do this because when I start the presentation I ask people what they are hoping to learn today. If I need to pivot my presentation I’m not held hostage by the PowerPoint, I can make those changes.

2. I had 5 points and 90 minutes. It FLEW by! I was sure I was going to run short and have a long Q&A time, but I had just the right amount of time, we started right at 11:30, and ended right at 1 PM. Be respectful of peoples time. If you run 30 minutes past the time you said you’d finish, how can I expect you to finish the project I hire you for on time?

3. One Handout, Five talking points. Don’t over think the handouts. I actually wasn’t planning to have a handout till I talked to someone a couple days before. I do like a good outline so I can follow along, and I decided it was a good idea for this group too. They all seemed to appreciate it.

If you want to do more public speaking, stop stressing so hard about it. Just get started. Tell your network you want to do it and do it. If you have 20 minutes, practice, and make sure it’s only 20 minutes of content. Have an hour and a half? Make sure to get the audience engaged and interacting so they don’t fall asleep on you or start playing Words with Friends. Just get GOING!

Reward the Right People

11.29.2012 by Elizabeth // Leave a Comment

Earlier this week I got an email from someone at an organization I belong to. The email said that I WON a free gift from someone who spoke on a conference call for the organization that day. Evidently they announced my name on the call. SWEET, I love winning stuff! Although, I didn’t sign up for the call and had no idea who this person was or what I did to deserve this (besides the obvious: general awesomeness).
If you are rewarding people for showing up, being a member, referring someone to you, downloading something, etc. make sure they KNOW they’re eligible to win the prize, and make sure they know what’s going on. There’s nothing worse than saying “You Won” and the response isn’t “SWEET I LOVE THIS!” but “why?” And I promise I didn’t do that…
I know I’m being “that girl” who’s ungrateful for the cool prize I won, but wouldn’t it have made more sense if someone on the conference call who was inspired by this persons story won the prize?

Hank’s 2012 Holiday Gift Guide

11.26.2012 by Elizabeth // 1 Comment

Every Year Hank gets a stocking FILLED with treats and toys, some of which he’ll sniff and ignore, others of which he’ll devour instantly. If your dog hasn’t told you want he or she wants this Christmas, Here’s some of Hank’s favorite things:

  1. Bully Sticks – these are not the most modest treat you will purchase this year, but it’s the only treat that lasts Hank more than 5 minutes and it’s way better than trying to brush his teeth. The only ones I’ve found that really work and don’t stink up the house are from A.B. Dog Chew and I find them at All the Best Petcare and Earth Pet here in Issaquah.
  2. Tennis Balls & a good Chuck-it– Hank LOVES to swim and chase after tennis balls. While he’s a good lab, sometimes his nose doesn’t always find the ball, or another dog steals it. Or it’s disgusting and we leave it “donated” to the park. So, once a year I pick up a case of tennis balls at Costco and we’re set!
  3. Nyima Bakery Treats! We LOVE Nymia treats! All Natural and Organic Dog treats from a local (Issaquah!) woman owned business! Enter HANK at check out for 10% off your entire order!
  4. Ruff Bowl– I’m not totally sure where I discovered this find this year but Hank is getting one in his stocking. They have a great Cyber Monday Deal today too. A dog bowl that attaches to your retractable leash and can hold a used bag? I’ll take it!
  5. Dog-Gone-Good Biscuits– I discovered another neighborhood dog treat company at the vet last week picking up Hank. Hank is LOVING their Heart Healthy Turkey treats in our cookie jar right now! You’re supporting a young (8 years old!) entrepreneur and your dog gets more great treats!

What treats and toys does your dog have to have this holiday season? Share your ideas in the comments!
